Rhythm, Sound and the Dancing Body
with Maya Matilda Carroll & Roy Carroll
Sound and Rhythm begin in the body, it is their native origin. The body is a listening instrument; through which we hear, sense and perceive sounds and rhythms from within and without. As dancers, revisiting and refining our sense of texture, rhythmical and musical timing; expands and deepens as we specify flow and punctuation, while making dance phrases, sequences and pieces.
Our work stems from touch, and grows towards attentive play with action, motion, flow, groove – all through which we integrate our intuition and imagination. Meeting at the junction of present time and composed works is a potent playground on which we explore and unveil choreographic constellations.
While working with live music, we highlight an embodied, kinesthetic connection between the musician's and dancer's physical orientation, gesture and presence. Accompanied by the live playing of Roy Carroll (electroacoustic-media), participants will encounter the complementary, urgent and immediate interplay between sound / music and dance.
The workshop is aimed for movers, dancers, musicians and performers who wish to engage with the physical dynamic of instant composition. Movement /dance background experience is required.

Roy Carroll is an Irish musician and composer, based in Berlin. He works primarily with electroacoustic media; which encompasses transducers, synthesis, feedback, audio recordings, amplification, software, - auditory and psychoacoustic phenomena even. With these materials, Carroll instigates processes that ruthlessly investigate timbre, articulation, gesture, form and so on. His self-made devices and instruments span the entire timbral spectrum. Carroll's work takes the atomic particles of music making, traverses acoustic preparations and extended techniques; and collides with signal processing and amplification. Feedback, the horror of an instrument hearing itself, is a recurring component of Carroll's work, creating multi-layered forms that continually renegotiate the transformation of electrical audio signals into disturbed air. Collaborations include The Instrument, Paroxysm, The Monophonic Havel, Splitter Orchester, Voutchkova/Thieke/Carroll, Hamilton Carroll. Read more
