The Instrument : Composition & its Tellings with Maya M. Carroll

In this course, we observe and explore ways in which the body's gestures, movement and presence in space - time become materials for the mind; recognizing layers of interactions, atmosphere and narration. Our work evolves from a tangible awareness - our physicality, ways of navigating in gravity, fluidity and breath. Through these great connections, we involve a process of understanding how - where - when we act; what animates us and the way we handle power.

Body - space - time are in heightened relationship when we dance. Our listening and attentiveness become intense. Inviting ourselves to this playground with trust and curiosity; opens a vibrant landscape for our imagination. Intimate universes emerge and reveal themselves through our actions and rhythms, our sense of poetry and story.

The work encourages imagery, the ability to observe and support our dance making and our state of performing. An in-depth practice which involves physicality, perception, thinking and dreaming. Creative writing will be included in this workshop, bringing notebooks and pens is recommended.

Aimed for dance-makers, actors and movers with a professional passion towards performance and instant-composition.

Maya Matilda Carroll is a choreographer, dancer, mentor and teacher, based in Europe since 2004. For over twenty years she has been creating independent dance work and performance, collaborating with dancers, musicians, actors, poets and visual artists. Her work evolves from her embodiment of sound/music, detailed physicality and exploration of vocabulary in her dance. Maya formed The Instrument (2011) with her life and artistic-work partner; composer / musician Roy Carroll. Their long-standing collaboration is a unique experience of texture and atmosphere within which Maya continues developing her choreographic landscapes. Through The Instrument Maya initiates and is involved in productions that range between independent projects and larger scale commissions. As a teacher, Maya leads master classes and workshops in Europe and abroad, extensively developing her teaching alongside her artistic work; drawn from and towards the human, social and poetic manifestation of the dancing body.

"My choreographic work is an embodied expression of primal - cultural longings; rooted in existence which craves creativity. The pieces become immersive universes; a listening space within which the 'real and imagined' are mutually challenged and exposed. In the act of creating and performing I sense the languages of gesture, dance, light, sound/music and image; emerging naked and autonomous. I am moved by a 'knowing / unknowing innocence' which can be transformative for our minds and bodies because it reaches below our opinions and expectations. A place, an emotion, a dream we may all project ourselves through. It is a delicate and raw experience, where I find myself dancing with elements that attract, concern and fascinate me. Each piece is a world, a ritual, a journey; inviting the audience to travel in and through"
